Story & Lore
Alternate-history Spain on the brink of civil war. Obey or defy chemical weapon orders, read newspaper consequences, and uncover the moral weight of every shell fired.
What is IRON NEST?
IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is a first-person dieselpunk heavy-artillery simulator set in alternate-history Spain on the brink of civil war. You operate a colossal four-legged turret from the inside — reading encrypted orders, plotting firing solutions on a tactical map, calculating ballistics, manually loading shells, and gunlaying the cannons.
Manual Physical Controls
Every lever, dial, and handwheel is real — load shells left-to-right, set powder charges, and gunlay the cannons by hand
Ballistic Calculator
Convert range and bearing into elevation and charge numbers — the most important instrument in the turret
Moral Weight
Chemical shells and orders you can obey or defy — every firing decision carries newspaper headline consequences
Dual Barrel Independence
Left and right cannons have independent loading, traverse, and elevation — Tab-switch your clipboard between them
Every control is manual and physical: levers, dials, pressure gauges, and handwheels. The game blends tactical problem-solving with war-machine management and moral weight — chemical shells and orders you can obey or defy add narrative gravity without preachy cutscenes.

Ammo Type Comparison
Every shell in IRON NEST has unique blast radius, penetration, and moral weight. Compare all 9 core ammunition types and select the right ordnance for each target.
Turret Operation Sequence
The 5-step loading and gunlaying sequence is the physical core of IRON NEST. Every lever, dial, and handwheel must be operated in strict order.
Shell Selector
Pull the lever to cycle through available ammunition types — HE, AP, HCHE, smoke, star, and specialty shells. The selector position determines which round enters the loading sequence next.
Shell Rammer
Pull the rammer handle to the right to push the shell into the chamber. Wait for hydraulic pressure to stabilize before proceeding — premature firing causes chamber damage.
Powder Charge Levers
Pull down 1 to 6 powder charge levers matching the ballistic calculator output. Too few charges fall short; too many overshoot. The calculator specifies exact charge count.
Traverse Handwheel
Rotate the traverse handwheel until the bearing indicator matches the calculated bearing from the tactical map. Fine adjustments use the smaller adjustment wheel.
Elevation Handwheel
Adjust the elevation handwheel until the barrel angle matches the calculator output. Fractional-degree errors compound at long range — match the dial precisely.
Challenge Mode Scoring Breakdown
Challenge mode scoring rewards efficiency over perfection. Understand the weight of each metric to climb the leaderboards.
Tactical Intelligence Tools
Four map tools form the intelligence backbone of every firing solution. Master the grid, spotters, Iris preview, and pencil management.
Coordinate Grid
Military grid reference system for precise target plotting and fire mission planning
Spotter Triangulation
Use spotter reports to triangulate target positions from multiple observation angles
Iris Tool
Range-finding instrument for measuring distance to visible landmarks and targets
Pencil Management
Drawing system for marking bearing lines, danger zones, and firing corridors on the map

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fire correctly in Iron Nest?+
Follow the 6-step fire mission loop: 1) Read teleprinter orders, 2) Plot target on tactical map, 3) Calculate ballistic solution (range + bearing → elevation + charge), 4) Manually load shell and powder, 5) Gunlay to calculated bearing and elevation, 6) Fire and apply recon corrections. Trust the procedure, not your gut.
Which ammo type should I use?+
AP for armored bunkers, HE for general infantry and soft targets, HCHE for clustered formations, smoke for screening, star shells for illumination and correction, phosgene for area denial. The key is matching shell type to target — using HE on a bunker wastes the shot.
What if the ballistic calculator jams?+
Fall back to your most recent firing card — it records the last successful elevation and charge settings for each range band. From there, manually interpolate for the new range. This is why keeping your firing cards organized is critical.
What are common map mistakes?+
The #1 mistake is drawing bearing lines from the turret position instead of from the spotter position. Always draw from the spotter — the intersection of two spotter bearing lines gives you the target location. Other errors: forgetting to check map origin, not clearing old pencil marks, and misreading subgrid coordinates.
How does challenge mode scoring work?+
Efficiency beats perfection. You score higher by processing more targets with fewer shots than by achieving perfect accuracy on fewer targets. Use FDC pauses strategically — save them for counter-battery waves, not for hesitating on easy shots. Batch targets on the same bearing to save turret rotation time.
Can I refuse to use chemical shells?+
Yes — IRON NEST's moral system lets you obey or defy High Command orders. Using chemical shells has consequences shown in newspaper headlines after the mission. Defying orders also has consequences. The game doesn't judge you — it shows you the weight of your choices.
